Free  Introductory Course

  Basic Microscopy

 

Part 1   Tuesday, 1st September      Choosing & Purchasing your first microscope and accessories; The differences between Stereo and Compound Microscopes; How to set up and get the best from your microscope; Making temporary slides.

 

Part 2   Tuesday, 6th October           Enhance that image by using different lighting techniques; Practice your skills and apply different lighting techniques to examine a selection of ready-made microscope slides from our extensive archive collection.

 

Part 3   Tuesday, 3rd November       Making your own slides and mounting specimens for the microscope, including temporary mounts, dry mounts, acetate peels, simple staining techniques; The advantages and disadvantages of using different mounting media in making permanent slides; Slide ringing, labelling and storage.

 

Part 4   Tuesday, 1st December         Photography through the Microscope; General principles explained including some simple set-ups for use with digital cameras. Participants will be able to try their skills by photographing examples of ready-made microscope slides from the society’s archive collections.

 

 

Participants can bring their own, or use our microscopes.

 

The course is for beginners who whish to learn more about microscopy, the equipment, materials and techniques in a friendly informative way.
