The Humfrey Lecture 2013
'The Universe and Nature's Laws'
Prof. Bob Lambourne
ABSTRACT: Is the Universe around us the product of natural laws? If so, what are the fundamental laws and how do we determine them from observations of space, time, matter and radiation? Are the stars and galaxies a result of natural laws or do they conspire to produce the laws that shape them?
This talk will survey a range of natural laws, the phenomena they describe and their consequences for astronomical and terrestrial observations. However, the main aim is to address the deeper scientific question of what is a natural law, where does it come from, and just how far can we expect to go in quest to understand the Universe
