Discover the extraordinary world of British beetles with nationally recognised coleopterist and beetle expert Tim Newton. Beetles are one of the most diverse groups of animals on the planet, and the species found in Britain range from tiny, easily overlooked insects to some of our most impressive and unmistakable wildlife.
In this hands-on practical session, Tim will introduce us to the incredible variety of beetles, looking at how different species live, where to find them and the features used for beetle identification. We’ll explore their remarkable shapes, colours and adaptations, as well as the important roles they play in our gardens, woodlands, grasslands and other habitats.
There will be an opportunity to get up close to specimens, examine some of the characteristics that help coleopterists identify different species and pick up practical tips from an expert. We’ll also discover why beetles are so important to the wider natural world – as predators, pollinators, recyclers and food for other wildlife.
Whether you’re already interested in beetles, insects, entomology and natural history, enjoy exploring the wildlife of Northamptonshire, or simply want to find out what some of those mysterious little creatures in your garden actually are, this is a great opportunity to learn more.
No previous knowledge is needed and beginners are very welcome. Come along to the Northamptonshire Natural History Society at the Humfrey Rooms, Northampton, get hands-on and discover a group of insects that becomes considerably more fascinating the closer you look.
