A whole-day practical workshop with Steve Gill
Join experienced diatomist Steve Gill for a fascinating full-day exploration of the microscopic world of diatoms.
This hands-on workshop will take you through the complete process, beginning with collecting diatoms from a local source before returning to the microscope to prepare and examine what you have found. Steve will guide you through the techniques used to prepare specimens and create permanent microscope slides – with your finished slides yours to keep.
Diatoms are remarkable microscopic algae with beautifully intricate silica cell walls, producing an extraordinary variety of shapes and patterns that can only really be appreciated under the microscope. This is a great opportunity to learn practical diatom microscopy techniques with an experienced diatomist on hand to guide you through each stage.
Whether you already have experience of microscopy or would simply like to discover something completely new, guests and visitors are very welcome.
