Polarised light can transform an ordinary microscope image into something extraordinary – revealing colours, patterns, structures and optical properties that may be almost invisible using conventional illumination.
In this practical and highly visual session, Mike Asquith will demonstrate the important role polarised light plays in microscopy and explain, in an accessible way, how it works. Using a range of fascinating examples, Mike will show how polarisation can help us examine and understand different specimens, as well as producing some spectacular microscopic images.
Discover which crystals, minerals, fibres, starches and biological specimens respond particularly well to polarised light, how different preparations affect what we see, and why some apparently unremarkable samples suddenly burst into colour when viewed between crossed polarisers.
There will be plenty to see and discuss, with practical examples demonstrating how this straightforward microscopy technique can reveal an entirely different view of the microscopic world.
Whether you’re an experienced microscopist or have never looked through a microscope before, come along and see just how colourful and surprising microscopy can be.
Visitors and beginners are very welcome – no previous microscopy experience is needed.
