Spend a whole day discovering the extraordinary microscopic world hidden beneath the surface of a pond.
This practical microscopy workshop begins outdoors, where we’ll find a suitable local pond and collect water and other samples to bring back for examination. Then it’s time to put our finds under the microscope and discover just how much life can be found in what initially looks like an ordinary drop of pond water.
We’ll explore, photograph and try to identify some of the fascinating freshwater organisms we discover – from microscopic algae and protozoa to tiny aquatic invertebrates and other unexpected inhabitants of the pond.
With countless organisms potentially waiting to be found, no two samples are quite the same. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn more about freshwater ecology, pond life, microscopy and microscope photography in a friendly, practical setting.
Suitable for both beginners and experienced microscopists, this full-day workshop offers plenty of opportunity to get hands-on with collecting, preparing and examining your own samples.
Places must be booked in advance. A small charge applies to non-NNHS members to help cover costs.
