Join Mike Asquith for a fascinating practical microscopy session exploring the surprisingly simple technique of surface replication.
Using something as everyday as clear nail varnish, we’ll make fine replicas of leaf surfaces which can then be peeled away, mounted on a microscope slide and examined under the microscope. It’s an ingenious way to reveal tiny details that are normally invisible to the naked eye, including the structure of the leaf surface and stomata – the microscopic pores plants use for gas exchange.
Mike will demonstrate how surface replicas are made before everyone has the opportunity to try the technique for themselves and examine their results under the microscope.
This relaxed, hands-on workshop is suitable for experienced microscopists and complete beginners alike. You don’t need to own a microscope or have any previous microscopy experience – just come along, have a go and discover a fascinating new way of looking at the natural world.
An ideal session for anyone interested in microscopy, Northamptonshire botany, plants, natural history or practical science right here in the centre of Northampton and Guests and non-members are very welcome.
