Wood may look familiar to the naked eye, but under magnification it reveals an extraordinary hidden world of cells, vessels, fibres and intricate patterns.
In this practical microscopy session, Mike Asquith will demonstrate the replica technique, a fascinating method that allows the surface structure of wood to be captured and examined in remarkable detail under the microscope. You’ll discover how different woods reveal their own distinctive textures and microscopic features, and see just how much information can be hidden within an everyday piece of timber.
This will be a hands-on session, with plenty of opportunity to examine specimens for yourself. If you have an interesting piece of wood at home, bring it along and discover what its structure looks like when viewed through a microscope – you may be surprised by what you find.
Whether you are interested in microscopy, trees, wood anatomy, botany, natural history or simply discovering things you cannot normally see, this friendly practical meeting offers a fascinating introduction to another side of the microscopic world.
Beginners, visitors and experienced microscopists are all very welcome to join us at the Humfrey Rooms in Northampton.
