Astronomy Section

The Astronomy Section of NNHS is Northamptonshire’s original and largest astronomical society. Founded in 1957, we have spent nearly seven decades exploring the night sky and bringing the vastness of the universe a little closer to home. From the early days of the Space Age to today’s era of smart space telescopes and Mars rovers, we’ve shared the excitement of discovery every step of the way.

A Place for Everyone Who Looks Up

We meet twice a month at the Humfrey Rooms, where curiosity about the cosmos is always warmly welcomed. Whether you are a complete beginner just starting to wonder about the stars, a keen armchair astronomer following the latest discoveries, or an experienced observer with a telescope, you will find friendly, like-minded company here.

No expertise is required — enthusiasm and a sense of wonder are more than enough.

Discover, Learn, and Experience

Our programme is as wide-ranging as the universe itself. Through illustrated talks, lively discussions, and practical observing evenings, we explore everything from the birth and death of stars to black holes, distant galaxies, and newly discovered exoplanets. We keep up with the latest space missions and astronomical breakthroughs, while also celebrating the simple pleasure of stepping outside and learning the constellations above Northamptonshire’s rooftops.

When the skies are clear, we gather for observing sessions, sharing telescopes, tips, and discoveries. There is nothing quite like seeing Saturn’s rings suspended in the eyepiece, tracing the Moon’s craters and mountains, or catching a meteor streaking across the night sky. Those quiet moments of shared amazement — the unmistakable “wow” as a planet comes into view — are what make astronomy so special.
