Weather and Climate in Northamptonshire and beyond

The Weather, Meteorology and Climate Section of Northamptonshire Natural History Society brings together people with a shared interest in our weather, how we observe and record it, and the changing climate around us.

From everyday weather in Northamptonshire to severe storms, rainfall, temperature, forecasting and wider climate patterns, we explore the science behind what is happening in our atmosphere and how our local weather fits into the bigger picture.

Everyone is welcome, whether you’ve been recording the weather for years or have simply wondered why our weather behaves the way it does. You don’t need any previous knowledge or experience to come along.

Visitors can attend up to three meetings before deciding whether to become a member. One NNHS membership gives you access to meetings and activities across all our Sections, so you’re free to explore other interests too.

We meet on the first Sunday of each month at the Humfrey Rooms in Northampton.

There’s much more to weather than simply checking tomorrow’s forecast.

Our meetings explore how weather works, how it is measured and predicted, and what records from the past can tell us about our changing climate.

Topics range from clouds, thunderstorms and extreme weather to weather charts, forecasting techniques, atmospheric science and historical records. We also look at significant weather events, changing patterns and the evidence that helps us understand climate change, both here in Northamptonshire and across the wider world.

Whether you enjoy watching clouds develop, keeping your own weather records, interpreting a weather chart or understanding the science behind our climate, there is always something new to investigate.

Through illustrated talks, lively discussion and the sharing of observations, members gain a deeper understanding of both the beauty and complexity of the atmosphere. We look at how modern technology including satellites, radar and computer modelling help meteorologists predict the weather, while also reflecting on historical records and local data that reveal how Northamptonshire’s climate has changed over time.

The Section welcomes complete beginners, keen amateur weather-watchers and those with a more technical interest alike. If you have ever paused to watch an approaching storm, marvelled at a vivid sunset, or wondered how forecasts are made, you will find friendly expertise and stimulating conversation waiting for you.
