This specimen is the shell of a giant clam (Tridacna sp.), a large marine bivalve native to the tropical coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. The shell is composed of calcium carbonate (aragonite) and is characterised by its thick construction and deeply folded, fluted valves. These prominent undulations increase the shell’s structural strength and are a distinctive feature of the genus.
In life, giant clams inhabit shallow reef environments where they remain permanently attached to the substrate. The fleshy mantle extends beyond the shell margins and contains symbiotic photosynthetic algae (zooxanthellae), which provide much of the clam’s energy through photosynthesis. Giant clams also filter plankton and organic particles from seawater.
Species within the genus Tridacna are among the largest living bivalves, with some individuals exceeding one metre in length and living for more than a century. Their shells continue to grow throughout life by depositing successive layers of calcium carbonate, producing visible growth increments.
Giant clams are ecologically important members of coral reef ecosystems, contributing to nutrient cycling and providing habitat for a range of marine organisms. Many species are now protected under international conservation agreements due to overharvesting, habitat degradation, and the impacts of climate change on coral reefs.
